Akita Komar Architects - House in West Hampstead
Photography by Luca Piffaretti
West Hampstead offers some of the greatest residential projects in London and this house renovation by Akita Komar Architects did not disappoint.
Akita Komar Architects is an architectural design studio based in London. The practice was established in 2016 by Marcin Komar & Maho Akita after they graduated from the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.
Their unique design is delivered to any scales and building types of projects with great results, fulfilling the demand of budgets and deadlines.
Their current clients are private firms, homeowners and builders, providing service thorough initial design research to completion.
The existing building was refurbished completely in order to adapt it to more modern living standards allowing more natural light in and an improved flow between the different living spaces of the house.
The newly excavated basement - along with the staircases that connect the four floors and the master bedroom / bathroom, was the main focus of Luca’s photographs.
On the basement floor, a stunning Crittall screen connects an elegant minimalistic kitchen with the wine cellar and dining room, giving the idea of a unique open space.
At the same time, the large opening towards the garden improves the level of interior light and offers additional outdoor living.
A similar Crittal screen also divides the main bathroom into dry and wet areas. This different function of the two spaces is also highlighted by different monochrome themes adding both contrast and depth to the space.
Similarly to the basement, the main bathroom, dressing room and bedroom are cleverly designed to create a linear sequence of space.
The house’s walls were left mainly plain in order to display the clients’ varied art collection, which often pops out in contrast with the thoughtful simplicity of the rooms.
